LHM Opening Ceremony: Salsa Festival

Join us for the grand opening of the BIPOC Center as we kick off Latin茅 Heritage Month! Celebrate diversity with salsa dancing lessons, sample a variety of delicious salsas, and vote for your favorite. This is a special moment to honor and uplift our vibrant Latin茅 culture while embracing the diversity of our entire community. Don鈥檛 miss this exciting event full of flavor, rhythm, and unity. Lunch Provided.

Mexica Healing Circle + Workshop

Join us to learn about the history of Mexica healing circles and participate in a short ceremony at the end. Chayo Maciel is an indigenous healer who leads Mexica traditions, rituals, and ceremonies and more recently, with her husband, started the Huitzilin Hummingbird Project that offers individual healing sessions, healing circles, educational workshops, indigenous ceremonies, and indigenous workshops for children.

Lecture: Bernardita M. Yunis

Exploring diaspora and belonging, Bernardita's presentation will engage in counterstorying, a PalestinianCRT methodology, to name the stories of Palestinians in diaspora in Latin America. Through this counterstory, Bernardita names the existence of Palestinians in Latin America for over a hundred years, sharing of her efforts to connect with the homeland, maintain their identity, and continue to share it with future generations, despite violent erasure efforts and propaganda campaigns in Palestine and worldwide.

Join us for an engaging conversation about Cinco de Mayo! A common misconception is that Cinco de Mayo is Mexican Independence Day鈥攃ome learn the real history behind this important day. Professor Ulysses Acevedo will provide a historical perspective, while Vice President Laurie Scolari, whose ancestors hail from Puebla, Mexico鈥攖he site of the famous battle鈥攚ill share personal stories that highlight the cultural significance of this pivotal moment in Mexican history. Don鈥檛 miss this chance to deepen your understanding of Cinco de Mayo!

Virtual Artist Talk: Gabriela Hasbun

The Foothill Photography Department hosts this insightful talk. Gabriela Hasbun is a Salvadoran-American photographer based in San Francisco. Working mainly in editorial photography specializing in portraits, Hasbun finds much of her inspiration by simply paying attention to what surrounds her in 鈥渢he streets, talking to people, and listening to stories on the radio鈥. These influences are reflected in the subjects she chooses to focus her series on; from the streets in San Francisco, to the Black rodeo, to an editorial story about fat activists in the Bay Area. Hasbun and her camera have captured a little bit of everything. The result? An impressive CV accompanied by a collection of intriguing photos that bring viewers into worlds otherwise unexplored.

Join us for a Special Screening and Q&A with Eduardo Chavez, Grandson of C茅sar Ch谩vez Co-sponsored by The Art of Community and ASFC, this event celebrates Latine Heritage Month with a screening of Hailing Cesar, a documentary by Eduardo Chavez, grandson of Civil Rights icon C茅sar Ch谩vez. The film captures Eduardo鈥檚 personal journey as he connects with his grandfather鈥檚 legacy and explores critical issues like human rights, immigration, personal identity, and social justice. Following the screening, Eduardo will participate in a live Q&A session, sharing insights about his family鈥檚 activism and the continued relevance of C茅sar Ch谩vez鈥檚 work today.

Join us for an enlightening conversation on the cultural significance of D铆a de los Muertos with Laurie Scolari, Jerry Robledo, and Hilda Fernandez. Participants will also have the chance to build their own altars in honor of their loved ones.
