2021 Applied Portfolio Management Industry Mentors

Applied Portfolio Management at ÐÔÅ«µ÷½Ì utilizes a unique mentorship program to connect students with some of the top finance professionals from the St. Louis area’s robust finance industry. These mentors offer ÐÔÅ«µ÷½Ì students guidance and insights into the current best practices they employ in the field, giving students a strong foundation of theory and practice. 

Asset Consulting Group, LLC

Asset Consulting Group, LLC, provides investment advisory services. The company offers investment and portfolio management services to trusts, endowments, foundations, insurance company reserves, employee benefit plans, high-net-worth individuals, and estates. Asset Consulting Group serves clients in the United States. 

Kevin Moore, Consultant

Kevin Moore is a consultant who works closely with institutional and private investor clients. Moore's primary responsibilities include asset allocation analysis, portfolio construction, investment-policy development and review, investment-manager searches and due diligence, portfolio analysis, implementation and rebalancing and performance evaluation. Before this role, he was part of ACG's Research Team. He has participated in the APM mentoring program for two years. He enjoys working with and mentoring students preparing to enter the financial services industry. Motivated students always seek advice on the APM coursework, interviewing and networking, which makes the mentor role very rewarding.

Edward Jones

Although trends change, Edward Jones remains steadfast in its values and strategy. The firm focuses on building trusted personal relationships with serious individual investors. Edward Jones serves 7+ million clients through a tailored solutions-based approach toward meeting their long-term financial goals.

John Boylan, Equity Analyst

John Boylan is an equity analyst in the research department at Edward Jones and has 25 years of analytical experience across a variety of industry sectors. He covers the consumer staples sector. Boylan graduated with a bachelor’s degree from DePauw University and earned his MBA from Wake Forest University. He earned the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation and is a member of the CFA Institute and the CFA Society of St. Louis. He enjoys supporting students and helping them learn the fundamentals and "art" of the investment process.

Logan Purk, Senior Analyst

Logan Purk began his career at Edward Jones in 2006 as an associate in the firm's Rotational Development Program, working with Edward Jones Trust Company and Equity Research. In 2007, he joined the firm's research department as an associate analyst covering the financial services sector, and in 2011, he joined the industrials team as an analyst covering transportation stocks. In 2018, Purk joined the technology team covering semiconductors, software, and IT services stocks. He graduated cum laude from the University of Missouri in 2006 with a bachelor's degree in business administration, with an emphasis in finance. He earned the Chartered Financial Analyst designation in 2010. This is his first year working with Professor Doellman's Applied Portfolio Management class. He has also worked with students at Washington University and his alma mater, the University of Missouri, for stock analysis projects.

Kyle Sanders, Equity Analyst

Kyle Sanders is an equity analyst in the research department, responsible for the coverage of various U.S. financial services companies. Sanders joined Equity Research in 2013 as an associate analyst on the technology team. He began his career with Edward Jones in 2008 in the internal audit department. In that role, Sanders was a manager responsible for leading audits of financial, operational and compliance processes. Before joining Edward Jones, he was employed as an associate in Deloitte's audit and enterprise risk services division. Sanders is from St. Louis and has worked with ÐÔÅ«µ÷½Ì students in Professor Doellman's Applied Portfolio Management class for several years.

James Shanahan, Equity Analyst

James Shanahan is an equity analyst in the research department at Edward Jones. Shanahan has over 20 years of equity-research experience, covering various financial services and real estate companies. A St. Louis native, Shanahan graduated magna cum laude from the Chaifetz School of Business in 1994 and later earned an MBA from the Olin School of Business at Washington University. He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and is a member of the CFA Institute and the CFA Society of St. Louis. He has supported ÐÔÅ«µ÷½Ì students for several years as an industry mentor for the CFA Challenge and Professor Doellman's Advanced Portfolio Management class.

Kennedy Capital Management

Founded in 1980, St. Louis-based Kennedy Capital Management, Inc. (KCM) delivers investment strategies to corporate and public pension funds, endowments, foundations, multi-employer plans and high-net-worth individuals. The privately held, employee-owned boutique investment firm specializes in managing micro-to-mid cap strategies across the growth-to-value spectrum focused on generating attractive returns for its clients. 

Ryan Dunnegan, Assistant Portfolio Manager

Ryan Dunnegan is the assistant portfolio manager for the small-cap growth and SMID cap growth strategies at Kennedy Capital Management (KCM). Dunnegan is also a research analyst responsible for selecting and monitoring securities within the health care sector of KCM’s universe. In addition, He co-manages the Equity Research Internship Program and began his investment career at KCM in 2006 during a two-year internship. He subsequently transitioned to an associate equity analyst with KCM from 2008 to 2009 while earning his Master of Accounting degree. After completing his master’s degree, Ryan spent nearly four years at KPMG LLP, where he provided audit services in accordance with U.S. GAAP and IFRS standards to an array of public and privately held global companies. Dunnegan earned his B.S. in business administration with a concentration in accounting and a Master of Accounting from ÐÔÅ«µ÷½Ì. He has worked with ÐÔÅ«µ÷½Ì students for many years in the KCM internship program and was excited for the opportunity to be an APM mentor.

Alex Mosman, Portfolio Manager 

Alex Mosman is the portfolio manager for the small-cap select and small-cap select SRI strategies at Kennedy Capital Management (KCM).  Mosman was a full-time research analyst covering information technology for over 11 years at KCM after gaining experience in equity analysis through his two-year internship at KCM.  He grew up in the St. Louis metro region and attended ÐÔÅ«µ÷½Ì where he graduated summa cum laude and earned a B.S. in business administration with a concentration in finance. He was happy to join the mentorship program to give back to ÐÔÅ«µ÷½Ì and help students gain industry insights into investing and capital markets.

Quinn Nolin, Research Associate 

Quinn Nolin is a research associate at Kennedy Capital Management focusing on small and mid-cap industrial equities. Nolin has three years of professional experience in equity research, including prior internships at other St. Louis-based firms. He has also held executive roles at Washington University’s student investment fund while pursuing his undergraduate degree. Nolin graduated magna cum laude from Washington University in St. Louis with a B.A. in economics and finance. He is currently a level 3 candidate in the CFA program. Nolin, a Des Moines native, enjoys the mentorship process and seeing students grow and develop professional skills. 

NISA Investment Advisors, LLC

NISA offers customized investment solutions for tax-exempt and taxable institutional clients. As of Sept. 30, 2021, NISA manages $317 billion in fixed-income and equity securities and over $174 billion in derivative notional value. NISA manages assets for some of the largest institutional investors in the world. Client portfolios include investment-grade fixed income, derivative overlay, and index-like equity investments. NISA is 100% employee-owned and based in St. Louis.

Craig Robbins, Investment Officer

Craig Robbins has been employed with NISA Investment Advisors, LLC, since 2012, and has worked as an investment officer with the firm since January 2022. Before joining NISA, Robbins held investment roles at Scottrade at Raymond James Financial. He earned his MBA with an emphasis in finance from the University of Missouri-St. Louis in 2008, and his Master of Science in Finance from Washington University in St. Louis in 2013.

Wells Fargo Wealth and Investment Management provides a full range of personalized wealth management, investment and retirement products and services to clients across U.S.-based businesses including Wells Fargo Investment Institute, Wells Fargo Advisors, and Private Wealth Management. Wells Fargo delivers financial planning, private banking, credit, investment management, and fiduciary services to high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth individuals and families.

Hazlitt Gill, Senior Research Director

Hazlitt Gill is a senior research director for Global Manager Research (GMR), a division of Wells Fargo Investment Institute. The GMR team conducts due diligence and provides research on the third-party money managers used throughout Wells Fargo's brokerage, private banking, family wealth and retirement businesses. Gill has more than 25 years of experience in the financial services industry. He earned a Master of Science in Operations Research and Statistics and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Ken Johnson, Equity Strategy Analyst

Ken Johnson is an equity strategy analyst with the Wells Fargo Investment Institute. Johnson has been in the financial services industry for more than 10 years, where he is responsible for analysis of the economy, financial markets, equity investment strategy and asset allocation. His work contributes to Wells Fargo Investment Institute investment strategy publications.

Before his current role, he served as a wealth planner for the Mid-Atlantic region of Wells Fargo Private Bank. He worked with clients to develop custom wealth plans based on a thorough understanding of their personal values, assets, wealth transfer goals, and vision for their legacy. Before joining Wells Fargo, Johnson worked as a financial accountant for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. He views mentorship as a critical ingredient to success. He aims to expose students to the real-life world of retail and institutional investing.

Lawrence R. Pfeffer, Investment Research Analyst

Larry Pfeffer has over 10 years of experience in the financial services industry. He is an investment research analyst at Wells Fargo Advisors, responsible for managing the firm’s Focus List and coverage of the industrials and materials sectors. He previously covered industrials stocks at Avondale Partners. Pfeffer graduated summa cum laude from ÐÔÅ«µ÷½Ì in 2010 with a B.S. in business administration (concentrations in finance and accounting). He is a CFA Charter holder. 

Ian Winlof, Head of Ultra/High Net Worth & Institutional Consulting

Ian Winlof is head of ultra/high net worth and institutional consulting for Wells Fargo Investment Institute (WFII). His team works with advisors in both Wells Fargo Advisors and The Private Bank to develop investment recommendations for individuals and families, as well as institutional clients.

Before joining Wells Fargo in 2021, Winlof spent nine years recommending funds and strategies supporting investment programs at Edward Jones. Before this role, he served as a portfolio manager for a registered investment advisor in Houston, where he managed global equity and fixed-income portfolios for high-net-worth clients. He began his career in 1996 as an equity analyst for the Texas Permanent School Fund covering the consumer discretionary and health care sectors.

Ian earned an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin, is a CFA charter holder and also holds the CIPM and FRM designations.
