Applied Portfolio Management

The Chaifetz School鈥檚 Applied Portfolio Management course (FIN 4630) offers upper level finance students the opportunity to directly manage nearly $2.5 million in University Endowment Funds. Students learn to conduct equity research and work as a team of analysts with guidance from industry mentors to practice their skills and successfully build a diversified portfolio as a team of analysts.

Building a Portfolio

At the start of the course, students select stocks to add to a diversified portfolio of university endowment funds. The portfolio holds the selected investments throughout the year until the next class of Applied Portfolio Management students reviews the portfolio and makes a final decision on what to include in the portfolio for another year. Students write and present research reports on four stocks as part of the course鈥檚 final project.

Learning from Industry Mentors

With the introduction of a new industry mentor program, students are paired with current finance industry professionals from the St. Louis area who provide insights into current best practices they employ in the field. This guidance, combined with the practical experience of the program, makes Applied Portfolio Management one of the most innovative courses offered at the Chaifetz School. The mentorship program has attracted mentors from Wells Fargo, Edward Jones, Asset Consulting Group and more.
