Robert Rosenblum: 鈥淒oDo Jin Ming: An Art Historian's View鈥
December 4, 2005
Renowned art historian Robert Rosenblum places the work of photographer DoDo Jin Ming in a wider art historical context, bringing forth compelling insights about both Jin Ming's work and the work of her predecessors.
Rosenblum鈥檚 talk is given in conjunction with the MOCRA exhibition DoDo Jin Ming: Land and Sea.
This talk is made possible through the generous financial support of the .
(1927鈥2006) ranks among the most influential art historians of the twentieth century. A prolific author, well-regarded teacher and scholar, and noted museum curator, Rosenblum taught at New York University for five decades. In 1976 he was named the Henry Ittleson Jr. Professor of Modern European Art. More recently he served as co-Curator of 20th-Century Art at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. Rosenblum's many books include the groundbreaking Transformations in Late Eighteenth Century Art (1967). In 2000 Rosenblum co-curated the exhibition 1900: Art at the Crossroads, shown at the Royal Academy of Arts in London and the Guggenheim Museum.
His colleague Mari毛t Westermann noted, 鈥淩obert had an uncanny ability to make telling comparisons between incommensurate paintings鈥攋uxtapositions that illuminated the special interests of each picture in the pairing.鈥 Rosenblum could discourse on artists as diverse as Ingres, Picasso, Warhol, and Norman Rockwell, and even the dog as a subject in art.
Rosenblum was recognized with numerous distinctions. In 2003 the French government named him a Chevalier de la Legion d鈥橦onneur, and in 2005 New York University conferred on him a Distinguished Teaching Award, the university鈥檚 highest teaching honor. MOCRA is honored to have had Robert Rosenblum lecture on the work of DoDo Jin Ming. He was a gracious and erudite man, whose often surprising insights into Jin Ming鈥檚 work were complemented by his wit and good humor.
