Why Do We Call Ourselves the Queer and Trans Wellness Clinic?
Queer is a term used to be expansive and inclusive of lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, intersex, asexual, questioning, transgender, nonbinary, and two-spirit people. The label "queer" has a complicated history and folks have varied reactions to its use (see this for some discussion), however, it also is a term of resistance from being labeled or boxed into stereotypes.
Humans develop throughout their lifespan, thus, we use queer to allow for inclusivity and expansive possibilities. In the same way, trans refers the beautiful galaxy of possibilities of gender identity and expression. Thus, queer and trans are fitting identity language that parallels the mission and objectives of this clinic
How Was The Clinic Started?
This clinic was started by a group of passionate couple and family therapy graduate students in the medical family therapy program and Katie Heiden-Rootes, Ph.D., associate professor and clinical supervisor. As couple and family therapists, we saw the social worlds of LGBTQIA+ people as central to their health. This clinic was built to offer engagement opportunities with families, partners, friends, community partners and resources.
