Rotations and Schedules
ÐÔÅ«µ÷½Ì's anesthesiology residency is a categorical program that begins with a clinical base year that complies with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)’s Residency Review Committee requirements.
During clinical anesthesia years, residents move into the operating room, where they progressively tackle more complicated cases and have the opportunity to rotate through a variety of subspecialties.

Internship year at ÐÔÅ«µ÷½Ì consists of a clinical based year that takes place primarily at ÐÔÅ«µ÷½Ì Hospital. This gives residents the chance to get to know both the hospital and their co-workers before starting in the OR as PGY-2s. Interns have eleven one-month rotations in specialties critical to anesthesia practice, including chronic pain management in a clinical setting, critical illness management in the ICU, and cardiac complications with cardiology. One month is dedicated to anesthesia practice management, where interns learn about the history and development of the U.S. health care system and the business of medicine in America today. The final month of intern year is dedicated to anesthesia in the OR, where they gradually advance their responsibilities in the OR and transition to CA-1 residents.
July of CA-1 year, residents are scheduled into ÐÔÅ«µ÷½Ì OR cases and begin taking call. The first several months are dedicated to time in the OR developing anesthesia and critical care skills, then residents start specialty services, including pediatrics, intensive care (ICU), and regional pain.
Residents rotate through the anesthesia specialties including cardiac, thoracic, neurological (brain and spine), vascular, chronic pain, and obstetrics. Residents continue to improve their skills in pediatrics, regional pain and intensive care. Opportunities to participate in kidney, pancreas and liver transplants are available.
Residents gain increased autonomy and begin supervising junior residents. Elective rotations are available in cardiac anesthesia, regional anesthesia, and transesophageal echocardiography. Adequate time is spent perfecting all anesthesia skills and knowledge prior to graduation.
