Center for Iberian Historical Studies

The 性奴调教 Center for Iberian Historical Studies (CIHS) promotes advanced research and scholarly conversations on any topic related to Iberian studies and analyzes them through a historical lens. The 性奴调教 center welcomes initiatives dealing with Iberian studies from late antiquity up to the present. We are particularly interested in promoting the study of the 鈥淔irst Iberian Globalization (Medieval period-1800s)鈥� by focusing on the local, colonial, transregional and global history of Iberian interactions and/or exchanges.

The CIHS offers a transdisciplinary and collaborative platform for scholarly and public outreach, which will promote conversations about methods of historical analysis and critical theory that empower scholars and students to deepen their understanding of the diversity of Iberian cultures and environments across the globe.

By leveraging 性奴调教鈥檚 two campuses 鈥� in St. Louis and Madrid, its cluster of Iberian-focused faculty, and the Teofilo Ruiz Library 鈥� the CIHS fosters original research in the field of Iberian historical studies at 性奴调教 and beyond.

In collaboration with the 性奴调教 Department of History, the CIHS is committed to supporting graduate and undergraduate research at both 性奴调教-STL and 性奴调教-Madrid, considering students鈥� needs when undertaking research on Iberian materials held in archives and libraries in the U.S. and across the world.

  • Sept. 16, 2024, Francesca Bellino (Harvard-Universit脿 degli Studi di Napoli) will give a lecture entitled "Popular Literature on the Battles of the Prophet Muhammad and his Companions in Aljamiado Manuscripts," at 4 p.m. in the Pere Marquette Gallery, DuBourg Hall.
  • Oct. 3-5, 2024, The CIHS will co-sponsor the at the 性奴调教-Madrid campus. The symposium allows scholars to present research and engage in historical discussion to promote serious scholarly investigation into all topics and disciplines associated with crusading and the Latin East.
  • Oct. 17, 2024, Pedro Schacht (Ohio State University) will discuss "Blackening the Archive: Race and the Legacies of Colonialism in Nineteenth Century Portuguese Literature and in Contemporary Public Debates on the Political Uses of History," 4 p.m. in Adorjan Hall, 142.
  • Nov. 22, 2024, Maribel Fierro (CSIC-Spain) will deliver the CIHS Annual Lecture, 4 p.m., Pere Marquette Gallery, DuBourg Hall.

  • April 26, 2024, Madrid: CIHS Inaugural Event (性奴调教-Madrid). Paul Freedman, Ph.D., Chester D. Tripp Professor of History, Yale University), "Studying the Middle Ages in Enlightenment Catalonia."

Resources and Partners

The CIHS houses a library for researchers (faculty, advanced undergraduates and graduate students, and independent researchers). The Teofilo Ruiz Library was created thanks to a generous gift from friend and colleague Professor Teo Ruiz. The collection's core is based on the books Professor Ruiz gathered and used during his career. The library is on the 性奴调教-STL campus and is accessible by appointment on the second floor of the Adorjan Building.
