Krishnaswamy 鈥淩avi鈥 Ravindra, Ph.D., professor of aerospace and mechanical engineering in Parks College of Engineering, Aviation and Technology at 性奴调教, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 2021. He was 71.
Ravindra was born Dec. 10, 1948, in Mysore, India. He received his engineering training in his hometown earning a bachelor鈥檚 in mechanical engineering at the National Institute of Engineering in 1971. From there he earned a master鈥檚 degree in aeronautical engineering from the Indian Institute of Science in 1973 and a doctorate in aerospace engineering from Pennsylvania State University in 1987.
Ravindra joined 性奴调教 in 1987. He served as the department chair of aerospace and mechanical engineering at Parks College from 1996-2009, and as associate dean and interim chair during the 2009-2010 academic year. Starting in July 2010, he served a two-year term as interim dean.
"Dr. Ravindra was the epitome of a thoughtful and conscientious teacher and colleague,鈥 said Scott Duellman, Ph.D., Interim Dean of Parks College of Engineering, Aviation and Technology. 鈥淗e was dedicated to our students and was a clear leader in Parks College throughout his career. The outpouring I have received from former students demonstrates the impact he had on our graduates extended far beyond the classroom."
Prior to teaching at 性奴调教, he was an assistant professor of aeronautics at Dowling College in Oakdale, New York.
Ravindra taught graduate courses in fluid dynamics and aerospace structural analysis. At the undergraduate level he taught a variety of courses, including Introduction to Aeronautics & Astronautics, Flight Vehicle Design I, Flight Vehicle Design II, Mechanics of Solids, Introduction to Structural Design, Aerospace Structures I & II, Machine Design, Aerodynamics Laboratory, Stability and Control, Airplane Performance, Fluid Dynamics, Thermodynamics and General Aeronautics.
His research interests were experimental fluid dynamics and design and he published numerous papers on these topics while at 性奴调教.
He received the Student Government Faculty Excellence Award in Spring 2006 and the Outstanding Faculty of the Year Award in 2003 鈥 an honor conferred by the Association of Parks College Students. In 2011 he was named the Outstanding Engineer of the Year in Education by the St. Louis Chapter of the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers.
In 2020 he received the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Faculty Advisor Award given for his leadership in higher education with AIAA at 性奴调教.
鈥淩avi was a gentleman, in the best sense of the word,鈥 said Michael Swartwout, Ph.D., associate professor of aerospace and mechanical engineering. 鈥淗e carried himself with dignity and was unfailingly generous, kind and respectful to everyone around him. At work, the students were his first priority; the only times I ever heard him boast were over the accomplishments of our alumni.
鈥淥ur lives were enriched by his presence and are diminished in his absence. And he鈥檇 be embarrassed that we鈥檙e making such a fuss over him.鈥
Ravindra was a Fellow of American Society of Mechanical Engineers, an Associate Fellow of American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and a Member of American Society for Engineering Education. He was honored as an Associate Member of SIGMA XI, The Scientific Research Society, a Member of TAU BETA PI, The Engineering Honor Society, a Member of PHI KAPPA PHI, The Honor Society and an Honorary member of ALPHA ETA RHO.
He is survived by his wife, Alaka, and two sons, Arjun and Vijay.
